Why Genesis Matters for a Biblical Worldview of Sexuality

I can’t imagine asking anyone other than Ken Ham to speak on the importance of Genesis to a biblical worldview of any topic! Since the 2015 Supreme Court decision to legalize gay “marriage,” we have seen a moral decline of epic proportions in this country. Ken has been on the front lines addressing how Christians should respond by giving answers based on God’s Word and sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. He had this to say about his upcoming presentation at Answers for Women 2019.

These are a few examples of recent headlines from around the world. We live in a day and age when people no longer believe marriage is a life-long union and insist now it can be with whomever (or whatever!) you want. And no longer is gender considered binary—the idea that we’re male and female is now viewed not only as antiquated but as repressive and harmful. Since it began in the 1960s, the sexual revolution has left no part of God’s design for marriage and sexuality alone. It’s all an all-out attack of epic proportions.

This thinking comes out of the secular, humanist philosophy that prevails in our culture today. In this view, man is the authority. We make the rules. And if we make the rules, why can’t two men marry (and why stop at two?) or why can’t a woman marry two men? Why can’t children sexualize themselves and portray the opposite sex? Why not use pornography with no thought to your commitment to your spouse or sexual purity? Ultimately, what is marriage, gender, and sexuality if there’s no absolute, unchanging standard? Moral relativism is permeating the culture.

As believers, we must be equipped to think biblically about the sexual/gender revolution rocking our culture. We must understand that God’s Word provides the ultimate, unchanging foundation for marriage, gender, and sexuality. And this begins with a proper view of God’s Word as the authority.

You see, if God and his Word are the authority, then God sets the rules and we must obey him. In this view, marriage and sexuality cannot be just whatever we want them to be. Rather, they are defined by God. And when we look to Scripture, that’s exactly what we see.

In Genesis 1:27 God created the first human couple, Adam and Eve. He created them equally in his image but distinct as male and female. He gave them different roles. Then in Genesis 2:24 we see God bring Adam and Eve together in the first marriage. It is here, right at the beginning in Genesis, that God defines marriage as the lifelong union of one man and one woman as one flesh. This is the definition of marriage that Jesus upheld.

He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? (Matthew 19:4–5)

The answer to the confusion in our culture about marriage, gender, and sexuality is that we are not the authority! We don’t get to define marriage, gender, or sexuality. Rather, we need to submit ourselves to God and his Word, allowing him to be our authority in all areas.

I’m looking forward to hearing Ken’s powerful message of truth that I know will motivate and equip us to defend our faith and share the gospel in an ever-darkening world.

Keep fighting the good fight of the faith!
